Most people you ask will admit they are concerned with their
diet. Why aren't they making better nutritional choices? A
poor diet can lead to a variety of health problems, such as:
obesity, heart disease, joint and arthritis problems, and
general poor health. You can begin to gradually improve the
way that you eat and make subtle changes to the foods that
are a part of your everyday diet. It's easiest to begin with
small changes because you may find yourself more accepting
of the change. If you begin by making drastic changes to
your daily diet, most likely you will go back to your
earlier eating habits when the cravings begin.
First, start buying more fresh fruits and vegetables.
Bananas and oranges are the highest in vitamin content, so
you may want to start with them. Vegetables should be dark
colored. It is much healthier to make a salad with spinach
or romaine than head lettuce. If you increase your intake a
little bit each day, before you know it you'll be consuming
recommended quantities of these healthy fresh and delicious
foods.
When it comes to your grain and bread products it is
important to make healthy choices and steer away from the
white bread and other refined flours. White bread will
give you no amount of nutrition, unlike whole grain breads
that are a great source of fiber and other vitamins and
minerals. It will be easy to add a whole bran cereal to
your morning routine and you~ll soon find yourself enjoying
the taste of whole grains.
Make healthy selections for protein -- fish and poultry and
limit the amount of red meat in your diet. Plan to reduce
your intake of fat in your diet, animal fats and other fats.
Use healthy oils such as virgin olive oil and canola oil
when cooking. Bake or poach your fish and poultry to help
reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Eliminate or reduce
your consumption of fried foods, such as donuts and potato
chips. Try healthier choices such as popcorn (with a little
or no butter) and rice cakes.
Try to trick you sweet tooth with substitutes for cookies
and cakes - options such as such as dried fruit, low fat
cookies, low fat ice cream, or low fat candies. Making
changes to the way you eat can be a life long process, with
a little bit of patience and determination you can
dramatically change your life. Not only will you feel more
healthy and vibrant, but you may be surprised by how the
tastes of foods change for the better!
