A great way to prevent injuries and improve running and walking performance is to supplement your
marathon training program with a strength training routine. The benefits of an appropriate strength
training program include improved “strength balance”, muscle symmetry, flexibility, and range of
motion. By nature, marathoners do a lot of repetitive training, resulting in overdeveloping some muscle
groups (e.g., quadriceps), while others are underutilized (e.g., hamstrings). The result is a muscular
imbalance that may increase your risk for common running injuries (e.g., plantar fasciitis, patella
femoral syndrome, achilles tendonitis). Strength training can help maintain the muscle strength balance
and keep you on the roads and off the injury list.

Building strength on the run

As a rule, strength training is usually incorporated into a triathlete's training regime for two reasons: to further develop the muscles that are involved in running (and cycling and swimming) and to prevent injury. The greater your strength and endurance, the more capable you are of having better performances and fewer injuries.

A new approach to strength training for runners
Posted On 9/5/2006 8:40:30 AM by Sandy
First I realized to win my age group (or even place for that matter) I should have picked better parents since genetics is a big factor. The second thing I realized is that if I have some free time I would rather be outside running. Third and most importantly, it amazes me that very few of the runners/endurance athletes I encounter ever step foot inside the gym. If they do go to the gym it is usually because of bad weather and they need to use the treadmill.
