Hamstring Pulls
Posted On 11/1/2006 7:15:11 PM by Sandy
A hamstring pull is actually a type of muscle strain. Muscle fibers are torn either partially or completely. A three point grading system is usually applied in diagnosing muscle strains, ranging from microtears and partial tears to complete tears and avulsions of muscles from their origins. The hamstring is actually more then one muscle, it is a group of 3 muscles that run down the back of the leg, opposite the quadriceps.

Runner´s Knee
Posted On 11/1/2006 7:16:44 PM by Sandy
Chondromalacia of the patella refers to the softening of the cartilage of the kneecap. The cartilage in our knees relies upon intermittent compression to squeeze out waste products and then allow nutrients to enter the cartilage from the synovial fluid of the joint. When you run, certain mechanical conditions may predispose you to a mistracking kneecap. Portions of the cartilage may then be under too much or too little pressure and the appropriate intermittent compression that is needed for waster removal and nutrition supply may not be present.

Shin Splints - Wikipedia
Posted On 4/9/2007 5:41:08 AM by Sandy
Shin splints is a general term used to refer to a painful condition in the shins. Shin splints are often caused by running or jumping, and may be very slow to heal. Freestyle skiers often suffer from shin splints due to the stress on the shin while landing a jump. It is a common injury suffered by cross-country runners. There is no direct cure for shin splints; it heals with time and rest.

Shin splints and information on types of shin splints injuries
Posted On 4/9/2007 5:43:02 AM by Sandy
Shin splints is the general name given to pain at the front of the lower leg. Shin splints is not a diagnosis in itself but a description of symptoms of which there could be a number of causes. The most common cause is inflammation of the periostium of the tibia (sheath surrounding the bone). Traction forces occur from the muscles of the lower leg on the periostium.

Stress Fractures
Posted On 9/5/2006 8:27:37 AM by Sandy
Broken bones or traumatic fractures, while often suffered by football players or downhill skiers, are rare among runners. Many runners, however, may suffer stress fractures as their training changes and intensifies.
Like the vast majority of running maladies—tendinitis, fasciitis, and shin splints—stress fractures are overuse injuries.

Marathon running can damage a heart
Posted On 11/28/2007 9:17:10 AM by TriFatlete
Running 26.2 miles is not for the faint of heart.
Abnormalities in heart structure and function were found in men and women who ran the Boston Marathon in 2004 and 2005 by Harvard Medical School researchers.
For some 2,500 years, scientists have written about possible unhealthy outcomes of running for tens of miles when nothing is chasing you. But more and more people are doing it. In 2005, 382,000 runners completed a marathon, 80,000 more than in 2000. That has not led to a massive increase in heart attacks. In fact, Arthur Siegel, an assistant clinical professor of medicine, says the risk of dying from a heart attack is a scant one in 50,000 runners.

What a day in Kona (2007) - IRONMAN.com
Posted On 10/17/2007 5:27:59 AM by TriFatlete
There's one thing for sure from this day's coverage: No one could have predicted the events of this day here at the Ford Ironman World Championship.
It was a day that saw some sort of a stomach virus take out both defending champions (Michellie Jones and Normann Stadler), the champion from two years ago (Faris Al-Sultan) and Cameron Brown; a run in with a road cone take out a six-time winner (Natascha Badmann); and a leg injury sideline Luke Bell. Joanna Lawn, for the second year in a row, was sick for much of the day, too.
