Run a qualifying marathon - training only 3 days a week!
I'm going to pass one my personal experience with the 'train 3 days a week' program. My running buddy, (we'll refer to him as 'Ted'), and I both used a 3-day a week program this fall to qualify. I'll attempt to give a practitioner's rendition of the pros and cons of it. I'll talk about what we would do differently and how effective it was.

So you're walking home, munching on a bag of chips, when all of a sudden a pack of bodies breezes by. Runners in training. You watch them glide ahead of you in awe - their toned muscles tightening and flexing as their feet hit the ground, their sweat glistening and running in rivets down their supple necks, their chests heaving… wait, wait, we're not that kind of website.

Tapering

Many runners fail to realize that one of the most important aspects of marathon training is the taper phase. Reducing weekly and long run mileage during these final two weeks is vitally important so that you will be fully recovered from previous workouts while at the same time, be completely rested for the big event.
