Running Times Magazine: Motor City Marathoner
Posted On 8/18/2008 5:27:12 AM by TriFatlete
Brian Sell knows both the farmer’s and marathoner’s credos well. Growing up in rural south central Pennsylvania, he was surrounded by farmers, some of whom were his relatives, and learned early on their ethos of long days of hard work for often meager reward. “When I was 12 I worked at a YMCA day camp for $2 an hour, and the Y got half of that,” he says. Later, he got a summer job installing swimming pools. “There were a lot of 10-, 12-hour days,” he recalls. “You worked until the job got done.”

A runner is born
Posted On 6/9/2008 5:23:36 AM by TriFatlete
As I approached the Como Lake pavilion, I was being led straight to the gallows.
OK, not really. Actually, I was approaching a bunch of women dressed in running gear, their bodies twisted in complicated stretches. As I approached, I muttered to myself, "What am I doing here?"
Two weeks earlier, while writing a story about the Moving Solves Women's Running Club, I'd been struck by the over-abundance of perkiness in coach Kim Maxwell. That exuberance grew even more evident when she talked about how much she enjoyed training beginning runners at various fitness levels.

I'll Run for Donuts
Posted On 6/4/2008 6:28:38 PM by TriFatlete
This blog is about my two hobbies: eating donuts and running. Suprisingly, the two are related. I suppose my donut-love started when I was 15 and got a job at my dad’s friend’s Daylight Donut shop. Even before that, my dad would make homemade donuts for special occasions, like when we had a hankerin’ for donuts. I guess that explains why my Wranglers said “husky” on the tag. My love for running started in 2006 when we bought a treadmill. With a family to take care of and a family history of diabetes and heart disease, I figured that was a good time to change what could turn into a sour health situation later in life. I don't belong to a running club, but I do belong to the office donut club. I allow myself a donut if I've logged a minimum number of miles by donut day. So, run on! And stop to enjoy a donut along the way.

MarathonGuide.com - Marathon Recovery
Posted On 4/23/2008 12:46:40 PM by TriFatlete
Where is the problem in the following scenario? Jack meticulously plans and completes an ambitious two-month training program aimed at producing a PR at the greatest marathon the world has ever known, the Mecca of marathoning: Boston. Race weekend comes, Jack runs the race, and, when it's all over, he has accomplished his goal: a brand spanking new PR. Congratulations, Jack!
So far, so good. But what does Jack do after the race? He follows no definite plan. For several months, he oscillates between catching colds and warding off injuries as, caught in the postrace letdown, he apathetically tries to resume serious training. He doesn't return to a systematic training program until four months after the race.
